Green Street Hooligans

Review of Green Street Hooligans

The film is about Matt, who has been kicked out of Harvard University, because he has been accused for taking drugs, even though it was his roommate, who was taking the drugs. Matt traveled to England, where he met the hooligan Pete. Pete was the leader of the firm GSE, who supported the West Ham football team. Despite Matt was from United States, he became a faithful member of the firm, but not all the members of the firm trusted him. When he got in his first fight, he learned that the GSE got each other’s back.

In the end we think, the film is all about trust. You gain an insight in the hooliganism in England, and why, they are hooligans. You learn, that it’s not only about the fights, and the hooligans not just fight for the fighting, but it’s mostly about reputation. The firm’s rival is Millwall. Millwall’s leader’s son died in a fight with GSE, and now the leader wanted revenge.

The film ends with a big dramatic fight, where Pete died after saving Matt and his sister. Because of that, Pete appeared as a hero. Matt went back to United States and his experiences, which changed him, helped him to pull himself together and bring his roommate’s abuse to light. The film has a good ending, and Matt could study at Harvard University again.

We think, the film mainly glorifies the hooliganism, because it emphasizes the good things about being a hooligan. A good thing about being a hooligan is the solidarity. Even the fights were only showing that they got each other’s back. It doesn’t show all the damage the hooliganism makes. We think hooliganism is more of an issue with football because it’s the most popular sport in England. It’s not the national sport, but it’s still the most popular.

We think, the hooliganism is a bad thing, because it ruins the sport. It shouldn’t be necessary to pay regard to the hooligans, when there is a football match. If they are doing it because of the reputation and the solidarity, they could a join a sportsteam and still have the solidarity.

We are quite sure, that we would run away, if we saw some hooligans come toward us.
